Albrecht Behmel

Albrecht Behmel
Albrecht Behmel (*1971 in Böblingen) is a German artist, writer, and philosopher whose work unfolds at the intersection of metaphysics, geometry, and art history. Although his vivid canvases may, at first glance, evoke the tradition of abstract painting, Behmel deliberately positions his visual language as a counterpoint to the formlessness of Abstract Expressionism. His art does not seek dissolution but strives for order – for a structure charged with symbolic meaning, one that renders visible both the world and its interpretation.

At the core of Behmel’s oeuvre is the series Let there be light I & II, in which he explores the idea of a cosmic beginning. Inspired by biblical narratives of creation and the organizing principles of physics, he develops a visual grammar of origins using elemental forms – circle, semicircle, triangle. For Behmel, geometry is not merely a compositional tool but a universal code linking nature, architecture, and theology. In this way, his art becomes a form of visual philosophy, where rationality and mysticism, science and faith converge.

His internationally recognized style, The Magic of the Swarms, is characterized by shimmering surfaces, dense overlays, and symbolic references drawn from art history, mythology, music, and everyday culture. His work has been exhibited at the Empire State Building (New York), the Cannes Film Festival, Schloss Bellevue (Berlin), as well as in Paris, Glasgow, Manila, and Los Angeles.

Albrecht Behmel studied philosophy and history in Heidelberg and Berlin. Alongside his artistic practice, he is also known for his writings on cultural history and philosophy. His visual world, as he himself describes it, “tells stories like stained-glass windows – for connoisseurs and children alike.”
He lives with his family in the Black Forest and is actively involved in various social and humanitarian initiatives.
